Hospitals on FHIR provides a pragmatic, peer-driven platform for healthcare delivery organisations to share real-world experiences, software architectures, and lessons learned in adopting HL7 FHIR as a core data exchange layer. HL7 Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR) is a specification for health interoperability.

 The Chief Digital Officer, Stefano Dalmiani, of Monasterio – an EHTEL member – serves as the Chair of Hospitals on FHIR, a European initiative launched under HL7 Europe to unite hospital leadership, IT architects, clinicians, and technology partners.

This year, Monasterio is hosting the Hospitals on FHIR Pisa User Days in Pisa, Italy.

The 2026 Flagship Event: Hospitals on FHIR Pisa User Days

To bring the Hospitals on FHIR community together in person, this year Monasterio is hosting the Hospitals on FHIR Pisa User Days in Pisa, Italy on 19-21 October 2026.

Four key focus areas of the Pisa User Days are:

• Real-World FHIR Implementations: Case studies from European hospitals which are migrating legacy electronic records (EHRs) to native FHIR structures.
• EHDS and EEHRxF Readiness: All about practical strategies for aligning hospital IT systems with emerging EU regulations and MyHealth@EU services.
• Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Clinical Decision Support: All about leveraging structured FHIR resources to train and deploy AI models at the point of care.
• Cybersecurity and Resilience: Protecting interoperable health networks against cyber threats.

As host and chair of the event, Monasterio is providing a space where European hospital leaders can solve practical implementation challenges together.

Associated events

Two associated event are taking place in parallel in Pisa on 19-21 October 2026.

During the Hospitals On FHIR User Days meeting, at the i2x-a-thon event, more than 10 hospitals will test the implementation of the EEHRxF on its main data categories. European providers will have the opportunity to share their experiences and change management approaches.

At the XiA Educathon event, educators and stakeholders will exchange point of views on what European health workforces are missing. Attendees will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the future knowledge needed by developers, adopters, and healthcare professionals on the application of the European Health Data Space (EHDS).

This is a core event for European implementers of digital health interoperability.
