AI2MED
Artificial Intelligence in Medical Care: Reducing Errors and Saving Lives
Project description
AI2MED is a coordination project funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme. Its objective is to contribute to the digital transformation of the European labour market by shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in medicine across several European countries – the project calls this AI-in-MED. The overall aim is to support the growth of AI-skilled healthcare workers. The consortium consists of 11 partners from seven countries: Austria, Croatia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Slovenia, and Montenegro.
The project adopts a comprehensive approach. It begins by assessing the existing skills gaps in AI potential in healthcare.
AI2MED uses various research methodologies to evaluate the knowledge and needs of healthcare professionals in the project’s seven countries. Today, it is calculated that around 14 million healthcare professionals in Europe need more info to understand AI better.
Events are organised in partner countries to establish an AI-in-MED network. Discussions will be enabled on the promises and possibilities of AI, engaging stakeholders, and promoting innovative solutions.
Teaching and training courses are to be co-created. They will equip medical and data science professionals with AI-related skills. These courses will employ gamification, multimedia, problem-based learning techniques, and social media to enhance both student and professional competences.
Innovation and entrepreneurship in AI solutions for healthcare will be encouraged. Incubation Labs will emphasise interdisciplinary collaboration and societal engagement.
AI2MED is also addressing specific data science challenges in healthcare, such as data management and regulatory frameworks, to ensure the safe and ethical use of data.
Why the project?
The promise of AI in medicine is substantial. AI has the potential to revolutionise healthcare through improved diagnostics, personalised treatment plans, and enhanced efficiency in medical processes. Bridging the gap between healthcare professionals and AI developers is crucial to fully realise the potential of AI in healthcare.
AI2MED aims to drive a healthcare transformation by integrating AI into medical practice, redefining diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring with precision and personalised care. By leveraging AI, healthcare professionals can be empowered to deliver smarter and more efficient care on a global scale. Training programmes and Incubation Labs address the skills gap, and accelerate the adoption of AI in medicine. This initiative aspires to transform healthcare into a more accurate, efficient, and accessible system for the future.
The project objectives involve:
- Defining the needed AI-in-MED skills and competences.
- Raising awareness of the potential and risks of AI in healthcare for boosting innovation.
- Building high-level trust in AI in medicine, with an awareness of various DO’s and DON’Ts.
- Modernising Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) curricula with focus on AI in medicine.
- Building a multi-stakeholder alliance for AI in medicine.
The project kicked off in Croatia in March 2024.
