Project description

Want to know more about data sharing and data exchange in areas of key health challenge, like cancer? Want to follow how do AI-based toolboxes and health imaging repositories work together? INCISIVE could be the project to follow.

Today, there is a huge increase in the amount and availability of health data – especially medical imaging in cases of cancer – that can be combined with new technological tools based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning. Together, they offer exceptional opportunities to improve the accuracy of cancer detection, prediction, and follow-up.

INCISIVE addresses challenges related to the detection of patterns in large volumes of cancer imaging data. The aim is to increase the interpretability of complex imaging data and support more effective decision-making among healthcare providers. It also addresses difficulties related to data labelling and annotation, and the lack of availability and sharing of imaging data. One purpose is to use INCISIVE for training and validating AI tools to improve imaging methods.

INCISIVE seeks to explore the potential of novel AI tools for enhancing imaging solutions for four different cases of cancer. It solutions will be piloted on four types of cancer: lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancer. Pilot activities will be carried out on eight sites in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Serbia, and Spain. Overall, 26 organisations from nine countries are working together to achieve top results in cancer imaging.

Ultimately, INCISIVE aspires to enable more accurate and better-informed decisions by improving the sensitivity and specificity of cancer imaging methods, facilitate lower costs, and increase the accuracy of cancer diagnosis and prediction about cancer evolution and relapse.

Continuing its work until mid-2024, INCISIVE has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

About TicSalutSocial

TicSalutSocial is all about innovation. It has the mission to enable the transformation of the health and social model through the use of information and communication technologies. The foundation is part of the Catalan Ministry of Health. In INCISIVE, TicSalutSocial is one of the project’s nine organisations that are experts in artificial intelligence, medical image processing, data analytics, and security. From the same region, INCISIVE also draws on the competences of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre.

What’s in it for EHTEL members?

Following the news about INCISIVE will help EHTEL members keep up-to-date on the latest development in how AI and big data are applied to solve problems related to an important range of cancers. Plenty of insightful information facts and figures about AI use in cancer already underpinned EHTEL’s 2019 annual Symposium in 2019. This was one of the last events organised in a physical location before the period of the COVID-19 pandemic and was hosted by TicSalutSocial in Barcelona.
