The European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations (EFA) believes firmly that digital innovation and expertise must be developed in permanent collaboration and dialogue with patients – who are the users of their technologies.
A ceremony for digital care innovators on respiratory conditions
On 27 April 2023, the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Diseases Patients’ Associations (EFA) was delighted to announce the winners of its EFA Patients’ Digital Prize winners for this year. The awards honoured those who have made significant contributions to the development of e-health technologies for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) care. The prize winners were announced during a prize ceremony held in Ghent, Belgium. The ceremony took place in the presence of EFA’s 45 patient organisations in the European asthma and COPD patient community in 26 countries.
Patients reward patient-centred technologies for respiratory diseases
The EFA Patients’ Digital Prize acts as a recognition and acknowledgement of digital developments in health which put patients at the heart of digital solutions.
These prizes were the first ever edition of the EFA Patients’ Digital Prize for e-health technologies for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) care. Selection of the winners was made by a jury.
There were three core competition categories:
- best digital technology for asthma care
- best digital technology for COPD care
- best digital technology for both asthma and COPD care.

The jury selected one winner in each of the three competition categories:
- AsthmaTuner by Medituner AB won in the best digital technology for asthma care
- RespiraSense by PMD Solutions triumphed in the best digital technology for COPD care category
- NuvoAir Home from NuvoAir earned the award for best digital technology for both asthma and COPD care.
Asthma Tuner – a digital medical device distributed in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and the USA – gets one of the three digital prizes.

Underpinning the jury’s decisions was one key principle. Whatever the digital technologies are, chronic respiratory condition patients need to be at the core of the technologies that support them in self-managing their care and in getting support from their healthcare professionals. The technologies themselves, of course, can cover a wide range. Examples include connected medical devices, telemedicine, e-health apps, and digital health platforms.
EFA believes firmly that digital innovation and expertise must be developed in permanentcollaboration and dialogue with patients, those people who are the users of these kinds of technologies.
