For the SMILE project consortium this is the final policy event, taking place in Brussels on 18 September 2024, focusing on "Advancing Elderly Care: Innovations, Ethics, and Policy Perspectives." This half a day event will take place in the heart of Brussels from 12:00 to 16:00 at SINTEF's Brussels Office (Rue Guimard 9, 1000 Brussels).

The SMILE project aims to engage policymakers, practitioners, technology experts, and thought leaders in ageing to discuss the impact and potential of digital and e-health solutions in elderly care and to inform policy decisions. They will share insights from the Horizon2020 project SMILE and will explore critical challenges such as:

  • Person-centred policies addressing the evolving needs of ageing populations
  • Supporting frail older adults' independent living through e-health solutions
  • Digital solutions to alleviate the burden on healthcare personnel in ageing societies
  • Co-creating personalized digital solutions with older people to address frailty, chronic illness, and social isolation
  • Data management challenges in international collaborative healthcare projects
  • Ethical considerations ensuring privacy, consent, and equitable access, and the use of AI
  • Uptake of available digital solutions supporting elderly care.

Please note that attendance is limited to 25 external participants, so please secure your place in time.

SMILE PROJECT BACKGROUND

The SMILE Horizon 2020 project (Grant Agreement nº 101016848), led by a consortium of 13 partners from the EU and Canada, supports 'ageing in place' for older adults with severe health conditions through digital solutions. The project addresses societal and health challenges from demographic change and population ageing.

Through our work in living labs across Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Canada, we actively engage with frail senior citizens, including those with COPD, dementia, or in post-surgery recovery, and their formal (e.g., healthcare and social personnel) and informal caregivers (e.g., family and friends).

This approach ensures a patient-centric understanding of needs and preferences for in-home care. Based on older people's feedback, we co-create personalized digital solutions alongside existing e-health innovations, forming our Smart Inclusive Living Environments (SMILE).
